What is the difference between a
Semiconductor (Taguchi) Sensor (non-alcohol specific)
vs. the Fuel cell (alcohol specific device)?
The semiconductor sensor, also called a solid-state or Taguchi sensor, measures alcohol by detecting the change in electrical resistance of a circuit exposed to volatile hydrocarbons. It consists of a small bead of metal oxide, which is heated to a high temperature, and a voltage is applied to produce a small current. As a substance (alcohol) comes into contact with the small bead, it changes this current. This change is then converted into an alcohol reading. The major advantages of this sensor are its accuracy (when properly calibrated), low price, and its durability. However, this sensor suffers from two significant drawbacks. First, the device requires frequent calibration as the characteristics of the semiconductor sensor change with time and use. Second, the device is not specific to alcohol. Many hydrocarbons, including motor vehicle exhaust and even cigarette smoke, affect the response. Either of these drawbacks may produce an unacceptably high frequency of false positive readings.
The electrochemical or fuel cell sensor overcomes both these drawbacks. A fuel cell sensor is an electrochemical device in which the substance of interest, in this case alcohol (actually, ethanol), undergoes a chemical oxidation reaction at a catalytic electrode surface (platinum) to generate an electrical response. This response is then converted to an alcohol equivalent reading. By careful design and catalyst selection, the fuel cell chemistry can be geared to work only with a limited range of fuel substances. This is what gives the cell its high specificity to alcohol. This sensor has much greater stability in calibration, which reduces maintenance requirements. More importantly, the device is specific to alcohol (actually, ethanol), thereby greatly reducing false positives. Its relative disadvantage is its higher cost. Fuel cells are the preferred choice for law enforcement and workplace testing when repeatable, accurate results are required for breath alcohol testing. |

COMMON MACHINE QUESTIONS
Why would a bar owner want a machine?
It projects the owner as a "responsible corporate citizen" in the community. It provides a tool and a tactful way to cut-off drunk and unruly customers. In this age people are more aware of their blood pressure, cholesterol levels and now they want to be "Alcohol Aware" too.
What do I need to do to service my machines?
The machines should be checked on a weekly basis for the first 3 weeks. After that you can service them every 3 to 4 weeks. Service is minimal. All you need to do is: collect your money, replace your straws, and clean the outside of the machine with mild soap and water. Then check the machine's calibration about every 6 months.
What types of people use our machines?
Everyone, young and old. With the growing Worldwide concern over drunk driving more and more people are wanting to be "alcohol aware." Most of the repeat users will be young people at college bars and sports bars. Many businessmen are also using these machines again and again. The drunk driving issues insure repeat use of our machine for years of constant income.
Can I do this business Part Time?
Yes, it should take you 5 minutes per machine, plus travel time. You can work your own hours, when you want to work. You can work close to home. You will be your own boss. "If you want to work hard for someone, you want it to be YOURSELF."
How much money can I make?
That depends on the number of machines you own, the type of locations you have, and how hard you want to work. Generally, most vending machines don't make money!
What makes money?
The LOCATION, The LOCATION, The LOCATION. A great machine in a poor location will earn small profits for you.
What about liability?
The following conditions are necessary for a legal breath sample to be taken:
- The test must be in a controlled environment, no alcohol or smoke present.
- The test must be administered by a certified State/Provinical technician.
- The test results must be in a printed form for admission into court.
- The test must be on a State/Provincial approved and certified machine.
There is a legal disclaimer printed on the front of each machine.
What are the best locations?
Sports bars, Military clubs, Discos, large Nightclubs, College bars, Restaurants, Race tracks, Sporting events, or just about anyplace that a large amount of alcohol is served.
Is there a right way and wrong way to properly locate machines?
Yes, most definitely. Our machines are not difficult to place. Trying to pre-locate and sell the machine with pictures and brochures is a BAD IDEA. However, until you have all the details of this business and can represent the machines in a professional way we recommend that you don't try to pre-locate machines.
Demonstrating the machine in person is the best way for you to show the machines "TALKING ABILITY" as well as it's amusement factor. This is important in locating the best locations, the "IN PLACES." By letting the owner try the machine for the first time, your will secure a good location and win the bar owner's confidence. A potentially good location can be lost if the distributor is not prepared to answer the key questions as well as "DEMONSTRATE THE MACHINE."
We suggest that you wait until you receive your first machines with our training manual which gives you a step by step description of what is needed to be successful in this business. This is a very important part of what comes with your first machines.
How much can I charge?
There are several key factors in deciding how much to charge for each test. In the U.S., most college area bars will have no problem paying 1 US dollar per test, or 1 Dollar Canadian.
What is the lifetime of the machine?
The machines comes with a facory 1 year warranty or an optional 5 year warranty. The machine can last 20 years.
